In 1740, a French Naval arsenal was built in Turtle bay, as well as a flour mill, iron foundry and gunpowder room. All the buildings were built utilizing volcanic rock.

8 May 1747, Admiral Boscawen with a fleet of 23 British ships, attemted to take over Mauritius, but was unsuccessful after the French fired a barrage of cannon fire at them.

28 September 1748, a huge explosion ripped through the gunpowder room, destroying majority of buildings in the vicinity. To this day, the locals believe that British spies were responsible.

we had a function on the Wednesday night at the ruins, which was lit up with beautiful lights.
